Don’t go on A Diet, Fix the One You Got
By Brett Cook, MS,CSCS
According to research, one out of every three Americans today is on some type of diet in an attempt to lose weight or improve their health. Popular diets such as the South Beach Diet, the Zone Diet, and of course, the Atkins Diet are sweeping the nation. Most definitions of the word Diet refer to an unusual way of eating. Experts in the field of nutrition indicate that the majority of diets followed by Americans are nutritionally unsound and fail over the long term. Approximately 90% of individuals who go on a special diet to lose weight regain all the weight they lost within one year. Most diets are a short term fix to a long term problem
Today’s American diet is far too high in fat, sugar, salt, and calories. As a result, over 60% of the adult population in this country is overweight or obese. The bible says that in the last days people will be afflicted by pestilences or disease. Many of the diseases we suffer from today are a direct result of poor nutrition and lack of physical activity. The key to better health is eating a well balanced diet which emphasizes plenty of fruits, vegetables, and water. It says in Ezekiel 47:13 “Their fruits will serve for food and their leaves for healing.” Fruits and vegetables are generally low in calories, have a high nutrient density, and contain cancer fighting elements such as antioxidants and fiber. Low fat meat and dairy products should also be included in a well balanced diet to limit your intake of saturated fat and calories. Also, limit your intake of fried or processed foods, and consume foods in their natural state the way God intended. Remember, God did not place his foods in boxes, bottles, or cans. In addition to eating a well balanced diet, you should also exercise on a regular basis. Any diet that does not encourage daily exercise should not be followed. The book of Proverbs (21:25), says “The desires of lazy people will be their ruin.” Walking is a convenient and easy way to meet your exercise needs while modeling yourself after Jesus. Jesus walked and so should we!
