Christ Fellowship has always sought to express God in the most creative ways possibly. Creativity done with excellence helps tear down walls between God and people. Creativity makes the gospel feel understandable, more relevant to people. One of our leadership values is “Excellence increases Influence.” Ps. Tom often says “excellence honors God and inspires others.”
Because we’re a church always moving and planning creatively, we spend a lot of time staring at our great friend and enemy, the empty whiteboard. An empty whiteboard has so much potential, so much room to fill with ideas, some bad, some good. Sometimes as you move down the rabbit hole of creative ideas you can catch yourself veering so far off the intended course, you can also catch yourself veering off the intended purpose or message of the creative idea.
In January as I was preparing for a new year of possibilities and looking over the calendar I was looking for encouragement, for inspiration, looking for God to say here’s how we’re going to do it. God brought me to this verse that has drastically shaped my outlook on our creative ideas and process...
“We pray for you all the time—pray that our God will make you fit for what he’s called you to be, pray that he’ll fill your good ideas and acts of faith with his own energy (His power) so that it all amounts to something. If your life honors the name of Jesus, he will honor you. Grace is behind and through all of this, our God giving himself freely, the Master, Jesus Christ, giving himself freely.” - 2 Thessalonians 1:11-12 MSG
This verse stirred up so much in me, I’ve boiled them down to 3 quick thoughts...
- Pray that God will make you FIT for what He’s called you to be.
Being and getting FIT isn’t fun, it’s not fun because it takes hard work, it takes time, it hurts but we push through the preparation because we know the result is worth it. We know that when we hit our goal all the work to get there was all worth it. How much more should we get excited about being FIT for what God has called us to? I know that being what He’s called me to be is the greatest thing I can do and we can’t move on to the next line in the verse until we’re working on being fit for what’s He’s called us to be.
- He’ll FILL your good ideas and acts of faith with his own energy.
Our good ideas are just that, good ideas. Even if they’re great ideas our ideas don’t have the power to change people’s lives but our ideas FILLED with God’s energy have the potential to change people’s lives. I love the word “energy.” Translated to greek, the word is “dunamai” which means to be possible, be of power, miraculous power, mighty work. So when our ideas are FILLED with God’s power, God’s mighty works, and God possibilities, imagine what they can do.
Imagine the dreams and ideas God has placed in you. Imagine what the possibilities are when you align those ideas and acts of faith with God’s energy, with His power. I love the promise that comes after that first line “He’ll fill your good ideas and acts of faith with his own energy (His power) so that it all amounts to something.” The promise is that when we align our ideas with God’s power they amount to something. Our ideas don’t just flop in His hands but they’re used for His purposes. Which leads to the final part of the verse
- If your life honors the name of Jesus, He will honor you.
When we make ourselves FIT for what He’s called us to
Then allow Him to FILL our ideas with His energy
It ultimately honors the name of Jesus, it lifts His name up and makes His name known. The verse goes on to say “and in return He will honor you.” I don’t think that means He’ll put you in the spotlight or give you a massive platform, but what it means is He’ll take care of you, He’ll see your ideas through, He’ll bless them and what more could we ask than to play a small role in the story of God.
