Faith Moves Forward

Have you ever been so paralyzed with fear that you couldn’t even turn and run much less take one step forward?

A while back I found myself a passenger in a car driving through the early morning darkness surrounded by fog so thick you could almost taste it. The faint glow of the headlights on the white line and the occasional flicker of tail lights up ahead told us we were still on the road.

I was suddenly overcome by fear, fear that came from the things I couldn’t see. What was this fog hiding? What if there was something on the road? What if there was a disabled car or worse an accident hidden in this fog?

I wanted to just pull off the road and wait for the fog to lift, however, I believe there was far more danger in stopping. In the same way that we were following the faint glow of the tail lights ahead, someone was following ours. As I began to feel panic overtake me God popped this verse into my mind from Deuteronomy 31:8 – Do not be afraid or discouraged for The Lord will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you.

The Lord will personally go ahead of you. Wow! God is going before me He is already up ahead of me. Whatever I am about to encounter is not a surprise to Him. He knows what is ahead and He is preparing me for it. He’s already there! He will neither fail me nor abandon me but will see me through.

Moses spoke this verse over Joshua as he was getting ready to lead his people into the land that God had promised them. There were people living in this promised land that were not going to leave peacefully. Don’t be afraid don’t panic. God is going ahead of you and He will hand those people over to you so that you can move ahead with courageous confidence.

You know the paralyzing fear that overcame me in the dense fog can sometimes overtake us while traveling through life. We can’t see what God is doing and we just have to move forward in blind faith.

The great thing is that when we are following Him we know that we are on the right road. We aren’t just being guided by the faint glow of lights on the white line or the occasional flicker of taillights up ahead, no…we are being guided by a good, good Father. One who knows the number of hairs on our head. Who knows every ounce of our being and the innermost desires of our heart.

While our human finite minds cannot comprehend how He works. How can we not trust our every step to the One who gave it all? The One who loves us unconditionally? Never once has He left me on my own!

Where is He leading you today, that calls for your unwavering trust? Will you step out in faith because of the one who goes before you? Will you be paralyzed by fear because the fog is blinding you? Or will you move ahead with unwavering faith because the One going ahead of you can be trusted? Don’t forget someone is following your ever so faint glow from behind.
