Day 21

TODAY’S DECLARATION

TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL

SCRIPTURE:

I the LORD do not change. So you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed.

Malachi 3:6

In the beginning you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment. Like clothing you will change them, and they will be discarded. But you remain the same, and your years will never end.

Psalm 102:25-27

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

Hebrews 13:8

OBSERVATION:

On our last day of this prayer and fasting season, the final quality of Christ we will fix our eyes on is that He is immutable, or unchanging. All the other characteristics of Christ we have seen so far would have no lasting value to us if this attribute weren’t true about Him!  We know from our previous study that Christ watches over us, He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness, He’s a comforter to us, He has deep compassion on us, He has all authority in heaven and earth, He is fully human and fully divine, He’s full of wisdom, He’s incredibly discerning, He offers us trustworthy promises, He extends divine peace to us, and He’s a better God than our idols of money, personal authority, relationships, reputation, body image, earthly comforts, and pride. While all of these truths are remarkable in and of themselves, the fact that God does not change, and that Christ is God, means that these truths about Christ will never change. Though the earth and the heavens in their current form will fade away, our Lord will “remain the same,” as Psalm 102 tells us. That’s right! The realities all around us will “wear out like a garment” over time, but these truths we’ve learned about Christ will never end. Hebrews tells us Jesus is “the same yesterday, today, and forever.” That means if that you are leaning into Christ today for any of His attributes, you can lean into Him for those very same things tomorrow, the next day, and all eternity!

In Bible times, the Scriptural authors lived in cultures where the supposed “gods” were incredibly fickle. One day they could be compassionate, and that was nice, but the next day they could be furious and punitive for no reason. To keep the gods happy in pagan cultures was an impossible task, for their character and desires changed like the wind. What pleased them one day was different the next. What described them in one moment could be totally untrue by the next time someone engaged with them. A god could love a human in a certain situation, but hate them in the next. For the ancients, hearing that God was unchanging was unbelievably good news. The people no longer had to wonder if God’s character and actions would shift from day to day. He was always the same! The way to please Him today is exactly the way He would be pleased tomorrow. His character could be relied upon no matter the season, and He was not fickle. The same is true for believers today. The God of the Bible is not an ever-changing, moving target for us. He’s steady and immutable! Let this good news wash over you today. When it comes to Christ, everything you’ve fixed your eyes on during this season of fasting and prayer will always be true.

APPLICATION:

  1. Do you ever treat Jesus like His love for you changes from day to day? Why is this similar to treating Him like other gods?

  1. Have you ever focused on the unchanging nature of Christ? How would meditating on this truth change your schedule, your relationships, and your finances?

God’s Mission, My Mission

You are not going to reach everyone for Christ. But you can reach some. There is absolutely nothing like being used by God to lead another person to faith in Christ. The feeling of joy is indescribable.

Perhaps you have read through this devotional material and not yet taken any real steps toward leading someone to Christ. The time to start is now. You are very capable. No one is more suited to reach your friends, neighbors, coworkers, and family members than you. Do not let Satan trick you into thinking you are incompetent or unqualified.

Have a list of friends, neighbors, and coworkers and pray daily for them. Ask your Christian friends to join you in praying for these people. Make plans to transition your interaction with them from surface-level to personal. This will later give you a bridge to move on to a spiritual level. You are well on your way to bringing them to faith in Christ!

PRAYER:

That God will bless you every step of the way. That He will give you the right people to pursue. That God will give you a heart of compassion for those who are far from God. That the Lord will grant you much favor in your journey. That God will use you to bring someone to faith in Jesus Christ!

It’s comforting to know that there is no incertitude about how to please God; we don’t have to come up with our own ways to please Him. If we obey His word, He is satisfied. It works for me; I want to know the expectations so I can decide accordingly.
