Awestruck

When was the last time that you were awestruck by Jesus? When was the last time He asked you to row out into the deep water and let down your net?

If things are not going the way that you had hoped they would. If you feel like you are spinning your wheels, rowing in circles, trying so very hard but seeing no results – then you are in a place to be awestruck!

You know there was a guy in the Bible named Peter who was having this same problem. In Luke chapter 5 we read that Peter had literally fished all night long and did not catch one fish. Not one! He had even come back to shore and was washing his nets. He had given up.

Luke 5 – Stepping into one of the boats, Jesus asked Simon (Peter), its owner, to push it out into the water. So he sat in the boat and taught the crowds from there. When He had finished speaking, He said to Simon (Peter), “now go where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish.” “Master”, Peter replied, “we worked hard all last night and didn’t catch a thing. But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.” And this time their nets were so full of fish they began to tear!

Peter had everything he needed to do the job and do it well. He had knowledge because he was a fisherman. He had nets, a boat, an amazing sea- he even had his fishing buddies James and John but he caught no fish!

While he was washing His net a Man gets into Peter’s boat asks him to row out into the sea and his fishing is never the same. Jesus tells Peter to cast his net over the right side of the boat. He reluctantly obeys and his catch is so big his net begins breaking and has to call his buddies to help. I love what the New Living Translation says in verse 9, “Peter was awestruck by the number of fish caught.” Jesus made all the difference!

Every time I read this story I am reminded of times in my life when I have worked so very hard to have all of the “things” in place but it just wasn’t enough. Don’t get me wrong, all of the things are hugely important but often times they have caused me to lose focus on the most important, life-changing part, Jesus.

Remember the next time your wheels are spinning, or you’re rowing in circles and you aren’t seeing results – everything changes when Jesus gets into the boat! Do you want to be awestruck by Him? Invite Him into the boat, row out into the deep water and let down your net. You will be awestruck by the number of fish you catch!
