When I use to lead at our Wednesday night student services I remember one night I had a student vocalist lead a new worship song we’ve been introducing in our church. It was a tough song, the bridge had a really high part so everyone was curious how she would do. She absolutely crushed it, by crushed it I mean she led the song with such grace that it brought students into the presence of our King even in rehearsal. It was an amazing moment and it was the most engaging part of the worship set that night. This is not uncommon on a Wednesday night we have so many talented student vocalists and these Wednesday night services are one of the high points of the week. But this particular night stuck in my mind because I saw a student begin to recognize their identity and gifting in Christ.
For the last few months, this same girl had been singing harmonies a few times a month but had never led a song. She’s never asked to lead a song and is usually very quiet on the platform. A few weeks before, I heard her sound checking during rehearsal. It was the first time I had the opportunity to hear her sing by herself and I was blown away by her voice. When I planned the set list for the upcoming week, she was scheduled and I put her on to lead a new song. When we came to the point in rehearsal to run her song down, she completely tore down the house. The people in the room setting up, most of them her peers, were blown away by the talent that God placed inside of her and she was finally displaying. I think she surprised herself, and more surprised at the reaction of her peers. It’s truly a beautiful thing when you get see someone find their gifting and watch that intercede with building the church.
At Christ Fellowship our lead pastors are the biggest champions of seeing our students find their gifting and calling and to use them to build the church.
We focus on creativity because…
- Our God is a creative God
The very first act in all of scripture was God Creating, the 5th word in scripture is “Created”
Genesis 1:1- In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
Genesis starts with a blank slate, a dark and formless world and the first thing God chooses to do is create, He makes something out of nothing, He makes all out of none. He created the oceans, then land and continues on, as He creates light and separates it from the darkness, He then completes creation in the end of Genesis 1. He creates man in His likeness, “Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.”
- We’re made in His Image
We’re are the work of the greatest artist ever!!!
“We are all creative” God has placed inside all of us a creative mind, some people use it for music, some to create art, others to solve math problems and others to design buildings. WE ARE ALL CREATIVE, so many times we ignore the fact God has placed creativity inside all of us.
When we allow students to find their creativity it leads them toward their identity in Christ.
Our mission for our Students at Christ Fellowship, is to “lead students to Become more like JESUS so they can Radically Transform their world for Him.”
For students to radically change this world, and we complete believe they will, they first need to Become who God has called them to be. To do that they need to find the gifts and skills he’s placed inside of them and then happens when we give them to freedom to do so. One massive thing I’ve learned from working with students is that I’m usually holding on to something to tightly and when I release it to them to take ownership and it they find why their created and I get to watch God do what He does best.
The story I shared with you about one of our students leading on a Wednesday means so much because that night she found what God called her to do and for the first time she got to experience what He has for her and that is beautiful.
- We’re made for Him
Isaiah 43:7- “Everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.”
We’re are the work of the greatest artist ever!!! and….We are created to return the glory to Him.
Ephesians 4:12- to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ
The greatest thing to learn is not just the gifts God has placed inside of you but that He created us to use them to build His church. It’s so important to teach students that it isn’t about building up for themselves, it’s about something so much bigger and we GET to be a part of it. I love that the word Paul uses for “ministry” is actually defined as service, like waiters who serve people.
Because our greatest job as creatives is to be servants. We are called to serve the church with what God has placed inside in our hands.
2 Corinthians 9:8-11– “This most generous God who gives seed to the farmer that becomes bread for your meals is more than extravagant with you. He gives you something you can then give away, which grows into full-formed lives, robust in God, wealthy in every way, so that you can be generous in every way, producing with us great praise to God.”
We are made by Him and for Him.
